Areas You Shouldn’t Overlook During A Home Remodel

During a remodeling project, there are so many details you must plan; the paint color, the new furniture layout, the flooring, the mess — it’s so easy to forget about some of the less obvious details. That’s why we at the BC Team wanted to highlight some areas that you should give some attention to during your home remodel.

In our years of experience, we’ve learned that some of the most overlooked details of a remodel include:

  1. Windows

  2. Lighting

  3. Cabinet knobs

  4. Countertops

  5. Appliances (choosing them in the right order, that is)

These details are commonly overlooked, but here’s why you should never neglect these items.

Don’t Forget About Your Windows

Windows are so much more important than you may think. The older the window is, the less energy efficient, meaning money is literally slipping through the panes in the form of heat/cold air.

During a home remodeling project, windows may not be high on your list, but they should be. Before you start your project, think about how old your windows are. Most windows last about 20 years, which means they’re easily forgettable. If you can’t remember the last time they were changed and don’t have paperwork on them, you may want to consider getting new ones.

New windows can add a clean, crisp look to any part of the house, first of all.

Additionally, if you go with triple-paned windows, you’ll reap incredible benefits when it comes to energy efficiency. Adding a new trip along the inside and outside of each window will also spruce up any room or exterior side of the home.

Light Up Your Room the Right Way

If you’re not planning on having a dramatic light feature in the room, then lighting is often an after-thought. You may be good with your recessed lighting (and it’s a good choice too), but you may also forget to factor in the placement of each recessed light. In your new remodel, it’s possible that cabinetry, a new appliance, or a new kitchen island won’t be placed in an ideal spot for these lights.

Be sure to plan everything — right down to light placements. Professional contractors will think of this, but be sure that they know (and you know for DIY projects) where the lights are and where they need to be.

Additionally, new lighting can make or break your remodel. No one likes a poorly lit room, after all, or light fixtures that just don’t match the new style.

Some great ideas are track lighting and built-in lighting on ceilings. These are low profile ways to get more light without having to install bulky ceiling fan-lighting combinations or having large lamps throughout the room.

Don’t Overlook Your Cabinet Knobs

Some hardware can be reused, especially if you’re re-staining or painting old cabinets. Some, however, should just be replaced as it can make your newly colored cabinets look old.

Cabinet knobs and hardware are a small part of bathrooms and kitchens, but they shouldn’t be overlooked. For example, you don’t want gold cabinet handles when your sink is chrome. You’ll want everything to be uniform to look fresh, timeliness, and stylish.

There are hundreds of different styles to choose from; so it’s important to choose one that reflects the style or theme that you’re employing in whatever room you’re remodeling. You can go for bronze, iron, copper, chrome — every metal color under the sun! So your options are really limitless, just make sure it matches your style!

Don’t Settle for Countertops

Believe it or not, since most homeowners assume new countertops are cost prohibitive, they’re one of the last things on a home remodel list. We know it sounds crazy — we all dream about nice stone or marble counters from time to time. And it’s true that they are expensive enough to deter some homeowners.

But this doesn’t have to be so; there are many affordable options when it comes to countertops.

Laminate is affordable, and quartz, marble, or granite (depending on the size of the counters), can be a cost-effective accent to any room. We recommend avoiding wood and tile though, as they’re often not the most sterile options.

You also don’t necessarily have to replace the entire countertop. You can repair any chips or dents individually or, if you can obtain the exact material of your current countertops, replace sections of it instead of the entire thing.

Choose Your Appliances First

A lot of home remodelers don’t think about choosing their appliances first. We get it too — this is probably the most boring part about renovations. You have to do a ton of research to make sure this model is what you want and reliable. It’s also not pretty and won’t drastically change the look of the room.

However, it can drastically change the layout. For example, you want to replace your stacked washer/dryer for two standalone units. Needless to say, standalones take quite a bit more space. You’ll have to plan your new laundry space around that.

For kitchens, it’s all about the layout too. If your fridge doesn’t fit, it can cause a catastrophe and really set back the remodel’s progress. So before you talk colors, counters, and cabinets, always have appliances in mind.
